The Walking Dead may have hinted at the return of Danai Gurira’s Michonne in a promo for its 11th season.

Following a short hiatus, season 10 of post-apocalyptic thriller The Walking Dead premiered this February, with six new episodes being released to round off a season that began in 2019.

Shortly after the 10th season draws to a close, the show will return this summer for its highly-anticipated final season.

The Walking Dead, which began over a decade ago, is based on the comic book series of the same name.

As such, it would make sense for fans to turn to the comics for hints at where the storyline could go in the future.

The official Twitter account for the programme has released a cryptic hint at a comic book-related plot point, sharing a video of a cake rotating on a plate, followed by flashes of photographs of unnamed people.

‘The latest #TWD Season 11 promo teases a major comic moment,’ the tweet teased, providing fans in the know with a clear-cut clue as to the direction of the storyline.

Several fans recognised the compilation of photographs as coming from the ‘Wall of the Lost’ from the comics, a wall in the Commonwealth where people place pictures of their missing loved ones in the hope that they’ll be reunited.

But a few also realised that the cake in the shot drew back to a story arc in the source material featuring Michonne and her long-lost daughter Elodie, who she believed to be dead.

Given Black Panther star Danai made her last appearance as Michonne during one of the earlier episodes of season 10, this could mean she may be making a comeback.

In October last year, executive producer Scott Gimple confirmed that Michonne would be back at some point.

When asked by Collider if she will be returning, he responded: ‘Absolutely. You’ll be seeing Michonne, yeah. We’re going to be telling stories with Michonne again. The end of her on the series was, in many ways, the start of the story.’

Aside from the possible hint at Michonne’s reunion with her daughter – or at least a reunion of sorts – a number of The Walking Dead fans expressed their excitement over ‘The Wall of the Lost’ appearing in the show.

‘No way we gonna see the wall of the lost crazy,’ one person commented.

Another fan said that they were ‘curious’ to see how The Walking Dead will ‘adapt the arc’ of Michonne and her daughter, considering Michonne left the show.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC in the US, with episodes broadcast in the UK the following Monday at 9pm on Fox.
