Zack Snyder has explained why his reworked cut of Justice League ends on a cliffhanger despite no plans for a sequel.

The filmmaker was initially working on the DC movie for its 2017 release but left for personal reasons. Joss Whedon was brought on for reshoots.

With the movie being widely panned at the time, fans began the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign.

Four years after the release of Justice League, it seems their determination has paid off, with critics blown away by the new cut.

And, speaking to IGN, Snyder has discussed the film’s surprising ending, stating the final scene ‘mirrors another scene that I had in the movie originally, almost exactly.

‘I didn’t feel like I wanted to change the movie. If we were going to release the movie, I would really want to just release the movie exactly as it was designed, and that is what that scene is really indicative of.

‘It’s in-genre to end these movies on a cliffhanger. That’s kind of how they are, and I just felt like that’s what I wanted to do.’

Snyder added: ‘We had put so much work into, and so much thought into how the stories would continue, that it’d just seemed unfair to disrespect that work as well.’

Variety has dubbed it a ‘knockout’ and ‘more than a vindication of Snyder’s original vision,’ while critic Kevin McCarthy has gone a step further, describing it as a ‘masterpiece’.

The latest version of Justice League cost an estimated $70 million (£50 million) to rework.

The director previously revealed that he would not be using any of Whedon’s footage in the film.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is set for release on March 18 on HBO Max.
