BBC announces new Britney Spears documentary to uncover ‘truth’ behind conservatorship

BBC has announced a brand new documentary exploring Britney Spears’ conservatorship.

Following the New York Times’ alarming documentary, Framing Britney Spears, Bafta-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar hoping to uncover the truth behind the controversial legal guardianship which the singer has been held under for the past 13 years.

As it stands, Britney is unable to make decisions surrounding her finances or career without approval from her father Jamie Spears, her legal guardian.

The BBC Two documentary, currently going under the working title Britney, will follow Mobeen as he explores the star’s hometown Kentwood, Louisiana, and takes a deep dive into one of the most dedicated fan bases pop culture has ever seen.

Devoted supporters of the Baby One More Time icon have fiercely fought to have the conservatorship overturned and help spark the #FreeBritney movement.

During the course of the film, Mobeen finds himself at the centre of a #FreeBritney protest and interviews Britney’s fanbase as well as some of those closest to her.

‘I went to LA in search of the truth of how Britney Spears, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, ended up in a conservatorship,’ Mobeen says. 

‘I found myself in a world of lawyers, superfans and paparazzi and spent time with many of the people who’ve had a front row seat in Britney’s life. 

‘This film taps into the energy of the #FreeBritney movement and questions the industry, fandom and the laws that facilitate conservatorships.’

Its predecessor, Framing Britney Spears, horrified viewers with an eye-opening retrospective of the singer’s earliest interviews, exposing disturbing sexism towards the singer when she was just a teenager.

Several stars including Sarah Silverman and Howard Stern have since come forward to apologise for jokes made at Britney’s expense, and pledged to join the #FreeBritney movement while Netflix is thought to be making its own film about the conservatorship too.

Britney herself is now reportedly hoping to sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all interview, feeling ‘inspired’ by the TV queen’s explosive chat with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Britney will air on BBC Two this spring.
