Phillip Schofield suggests Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should ‘shut up’ after Gayle King conversation leak

Phillip Schofield has suggested that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should ‘shut up’ after US TV host Gayle King revealed details of the duke’s conversation with his brother and father after the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

Earlier this week, Gayle, a friend of the Duchess of Sussex’s, spoke on CBS about the Duke of Sussex’s first talks with Prince Charles and Prince William since he and Meghan made a series of startling revelations to Oprah about their time in the royal family.

‘The word I was given was, those conversations were not productive. But they are glad they at least started a conversation,’ the presenter said.

On today’s This Morning, Phillip and Holly Willoughby were joined by Gyles Brandreth and Beverley Turner to discuss the latest update on the story.

After first listening to Gayle’s segment on CBS, Phillip remarked: ‘Either that is the most indiscreet friend on the planet or she has been told by them that she can go on American TV and brief against the royal family and the British press once more. It can only be one of two ways.’

Afterwards, Phillip stated that in his opinion, it is time for Meghan and Harry to ‘stop now’.

‘The thing is that there’s been an enormous amount of sympathy over the race issue, over the mental health issue, an enormous amount of sympathy, but looking at the polls that are being had at the moment, that sympathy seems to be ebbing away quite quickly,’ he said.

‘Isn’t there, Gyles, this feeling that, you know you’ve made your point, essentially shut up now, and get on with your quiet American life. You’ve stabbed a knife to the heart of the monarchy, obviously there were some things that they felt needed to be highlighted, fair enough, but stop now.’

Beverley commented that in her view, Meghan ‘has a track record of doing this, of talking to friends’, while Gyles remarked that in his opinion, Gayle is ‘clearly Meghan’s new megaphone’.

Touching on the news that Donald Trump has said he’ll run for president in 2024 if Meghan does, Phillip added: ‘Aren’t we just thinking though, that if you’re doing it over there, ok Donald, fair enough if she’s your political opponent, that’s good.

‘If it keeps you busy over there, then fine. Just stay away from here.’

At this point Holly chimed in, asking Beverley if she thought perhaps it was a case of Meghan feeling ‘that these aren’t issues that should be dealt with behind closed doors’.

After Beverley remarked that this was a ‘good point’, with Prince William recently saying to reporters that the royal family is ‘very much not a racist family’, the group commented on the fact that Prince Philip, who left hospital the other day after a month-long stay, does not speak about himself in public.

‘Well there’s a lesson,’ Phillip quipped.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
