The Circle’s James Crossley, also known as Gladiators star Hunter, has promised to donate half of his winnings to the nurses in York, so everyone can chill out.

The series three contestant sparked some criticism online after he revealed that he’ll be playing the game under the guise of a nurse named Gemma in a bid to win Channel 4’s £100,000 jackpot.

‘I’m going into The Circle as my polar opposite,’ James revealed in last night’s episode. ‘Gemma, a 31-year-old single nurse.

‘In my opinion, nurses are the most popular people in the country and The Circle is a popularity contest. She has all the ingredients to impress everybody.’

Although some found James’ avatar to be ‘a massive insult’ and a ‘step too far’, he did point out he intends to split his winnings with them.

‘I would give 50% to the nurses in York,’ he added. ‘I have so much respect for the NHS.’

While for some fans, James’ Gemma persona was problematic, other viewers defended his choice.

‘People attacking on James/Gemma (Hunter Gladiator) in The Circle, for going in as an NHS Nurse. If he wins, he said he would donate half to the NHS Nurses in York. Give him a break!’ wrote one.

‘People are really hating on James for pretending to be an NHS nurse?!’ added another.’ It’s a GAME SHOW, that requires GAME PLAY. And not that it would matter if he didn’t, but he even said he would donate half his winnings… Get a grip guys!’

James is up against a string of real people and catfishes, including Vithun, Billy, Manrika and Tally, on this year’s series of The Circle.

And after just one episode, viewers already think he’s got it in the bag.

The Circle continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
