‘Wouldn’t Bother Me’: Dustin Johnson Not Too Concerned About Title Defence at the 2021 Masters

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson did not find much luck at The 2021 Players Championship, but the American knows that he’s got a bigger responsibility ahead. Johnson won the 2020 Masters in emphatic fashion, and he’s not too wound up about having to defend the prestigious crown this year.

It has not even been one year since The 2020 Masters took place amid the pandemic. The tournament was pushed from its initial date due to the severity of the COVID-19 spread, and it was Dustin Johnson, who reigned supreme with a record-breaking score.

Johnson broke the tournament’s 72-hole record when he finished with an aggregate of 20-under 268 last year. However, the 36-year-old understands the pressure on his shoulder ahead of The 2021 Masters.

Dustin Johnson is not too bothered about losing The 2021 Masters

The Masters is one of the most prestigious tournaments when it comes to golf. A lot of players strive hard to earn success at the Augusta National, and Johnson achieved it for the first time since turning pro in 2007.

Johnson’s reign as the Champion will be one of the shortest ones in tournament history as the 2020 edition was postponed to November due to the pandemic. However, the 24-time PGA Tour winner is not too concerned about holding on to the coveted ‘green jacket.’

“It wouldn’t bother me if I only had it for a day,” Johnson said via a conference call. “I’ve got one, and five months, a year, one month, a day, it doesn’t really make a difference to me. Probably the coolest thing was when I went back up to Augusta and got to wear my jacket when I was on property.”

Only three players in history (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods) have won The Masters in consecutive fashion, and Dustin Johnson will be eying to join this elite list in 2021. He recently made his first trip to the Augusta National Golf Club since winning the tournament last year and is satisfied with the conditions.

“The course is in immaculate condition. It looks like it’s shaping up to be a normal Masters, and so I’m really looking forward to that,” Johnson mentioned.

The victory in 2020 was indeed an emotional and uplifting one for the No. 1 golfer in the world. The 2021 Masters will run from April 8-11 and only time can tell if Dustin Johnson will retain the crown.
