BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty apologises for liking ‘offensive’ tweets about Union Jack flag in MP’s video call
BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty has apologised for liking tweets that were ‘offensive in nature’ after an MP appeared via video call the programme with the Union Jack flag in the back ground.
Naga’s co-host Charlie Stayt was praised for poking fun at Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick’s flag as being ‘not up to standard size government interview measurements’ during Thursday morning’s episode.
Later on Thursday night the newsreader, 46, tweeted to clarify that she had ‘unliked’ the tweets and they ‘do not represent’ her views.
Naga wrote: ‘I “liked” tweets today that were offensive in nature about the use of the British flag as a backdrop in a government interview this morning.
‘I have since removed these ‘likes’. This do not represent the views of me or the BBC. I apologise for any offence taken. Naga.’
In that morning’s episode Charlie drew attention to the Union Jack flag that was visible behind the housing secretary during his interview.
At the end of the segment Charlie said: ‘I think your flag is not up to standard size government interview measurements.’
‘I think it’s just a little small, but that’s your department, really.’
Naga could be heard laughing before the camera went back to the studio where she was sat with her hand over her mouth, chuckling.
‘Just a thought,’ Charlie quipped.
Naga said: ‘There’s always a flag. They had the picture of the Queen though. In the Westminster office I am assuming.’
Naga has been part of BBC Breakfast since 2008, becoming a lead presenter in 2014.
In 2019 the broadcaster found herself at the centre of the news after she called out then-President Donald Trump over his comments about four congresswomen of colour.
Naga was supported by her BBC Breakfast colleagues, but was initially found to have broken the BBC’s impartiality guidelines by the broadcaster’s Executive Complaints Unit (ECU). However this decision was later overturned by then director-general, Tony Hall.
