BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt has been dubbed a ‘legend’ by viewers after calling out the size of Robert Jenrick’s Union Jack flag as he wrapped up an interview with the MP.
On today’s programme, Charlie and his co-host Naga Munchetty welcomed Robert onto the show to discuss the reports of a delay in the UK’s vaccine rollout.
Charlie also questioned the Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary on homelessness statistics across the nation amid the coronavirus pandemic.
While Robert appeared on BBC Breakfast via video chat from Westminster, a portrait of the Queen could be seen behind him on the wall with a Union Jack flag also propped up in the corner of the room.
As the interview came to an end, Charlie thanked Robert for his time, before adding: ‘I think your flag is not up to standard size government interview measurements.’
‘I think it’s just a little small, but that’s your department, really,’ the newsreader added, as Robert smiled awkwardly.
Naga could be heard laughing in the background, before the camera panned back to the BBC Breakfast studio to show her covering her mouth while chuckling over what Charlie had just said.
‘Just a thought,’ Charlie quipped, as he smiled wryly.
While Naga noted that there had been a portrait of the monarch on the wall, several BBC Breakfast viewers were full of praise for Charlie’s quick-witted remark on Robert’s flag.
‘@BBCBreakfast please pass on our congratulations to Charlie Stayt, brilliant work,’ one person tweeted.
‘Charlie Stayt – legend!’ another viewer said, while someone else wrote: ‘I love Charlie Stayt with every fibre of my being this morning!!’
One viewer said that the BBC Breakfast moment was, in their opinion, ‘TV gold’.
‘Charlie Stayt my bloody hero. Great timing and Naga’s reaction is priceless,’ another remarked.
On Twitter, Naga liked a tweet posted in response to the clip from BBC Breakfast that read: ‘That will be #charliestayt and @TVNaga01 in trouble again. Bloody love this pair.’
However, other viewers weren’t so keen on Charlie’s observation.
‘@bbcnews Charlie Stayt being sarcastic about the union flag being in the background of a serious interview with a government minister. What’s your problem Charlie? Just trying to belittle? That’s how it came across to me,’ one critic tweeted.
BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One.
