Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar has Naga Munchetty in stitches during BBC Breakfast today as he hit back at her co-host Charlie Stayt with the sensational quick whit of Superintendant Hastings.

The 62-year-old dropped by the morning new show via Zoom, where Charlie asked Adrian to deliver a classic Hastings line from the endless list of lines to choose from.

‘You must look through it and think, “I’ve got a juicy line there, I’m going to give this one some welly,’” Charlie said.

‘We saw in that little clip, can you finish the line for me? I’m not sure what the acting protocol is at 8.50 in the morning. It starts with when did we stop? That was a big line for your character, wasn’t it?’

Adrian began, but was swiftly interrupted by the presenter, who teased:  ‘You’ve got to give it a bit more than that. You threw that one away, frankly.’

Unimpressed, but smirking, Adrian hit back: ‘Yeah, yeah I did – I’ll throw you away in a minute.’

Cracking up, Naga laughed: ‘Best offer he’s had all morning, Adrian.’

And watching from home was Adrian’s co-star Martin Compston – DS Steve Arnott to you and me – who was, like the rest of us, in hysterics.

The BBC thriller finally returns to BBC One this weekend as the hunt to uncover ‘H’ continues after two years off-screen, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kelly Macdonald has joined the cast of Line of Duty (Picture: BBC)

Against all odds, Line of Duty miraculously came through to safely shoot through the most extraordinary of circumstances and now here we are.

But ‘a lot of time has passed’ both on and off screen, and the ‘landscape has changed slightly’, revealed Adrian.

‘People might be shocked to see where everybody sits at this particular time,’ he added.

Joining Line of Duty this series is Kelly Macdonald as DCI Joanna Davidson, ‘the most enigmatic adversary AC-12 has ever faced’.

Line of Duty returns Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
