Ryan Reynolds watches his box office flop Green Lantern for first time and admits: ‘It’s not what I imagined’

Ryan Reynold didn’t exactly receive rave reviews for Green Lantern so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that he’s only got round to watching the blockbuster now.

Released in 2011, Green Lantern was a huge box office flop only making an estimated $19 million (£13.6 million) profit on its $200 million (£143 million) budget and receiving frankly terrible reviews.

It currently has a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes which pretty much says it all.

Before getting stuck into Zach Snyder’s Justice League last night, Ryan thought he’d revisit his superhero movie of years gone by.

‘Excited to see the Snyder Cut. But ahead of its debut – and with the aid of a good amount of #AviationGin – tonight at 6pm EST I’ll do something I’ve never done: actually watch Green Lantern. Happy #StPatricksDay,’ he announced on Twitter.

When one follower mentioned him being drunk, Ryan confessed: ‘If we’re being honest, I started a little tipsy.’

Justice League director Snyder got involved with the running commentary and suggested: ‘Hey

@VancityReynolds maybe someday I’ll bring over some Hand on Stone bourbon and we’ll do a double feature.’

Ryan replied: ‘Yes! And we’ll watch 300 and Justice League. I promise I’ll raise my hand to ask questions instead of yelling, “how’d you do that?!” Every ten seconds like last time.’

Perhaps acknowledging the flop that Green Lantern was, Ryan quipped: ‘Starting GL now. First time ever. Too early to ask for a #SnyderCut of this f****r?’

He then revealed: ‘I only ever read my parts of the script so this is genuinely exciting for me to watch.’

It got rather cute when he spotted his real life wife Blake Lively in the movie and commented: ‘Hey @BlakeLively is in this movie!!’

Referring to the lives as parents, he joked: ‘This was not bad foreshadowing for my life as a dad.’

After giving special shout-outs to co-stars Angela Bassett and Stanley Tucci, Ryan shared a photo of the Green Lantern ring which he kept after all these years.

‘There’s a lot of heavy hitters in the movie. Not always used in the right way… but still… heavy hitters,’ he remarked at one point.

As the movie drew to a close, Ryan concluded: ‘Maybe it’s the Aviation Gin talking, but #GreenLantern was nothing to fear! Hundreds of incredible crew and cast members did amazing work — and while it’s not perfect, it ain’t a tragedy. Next time I won’t wait a decade to watch.’

However he admitted: ‘Watching it was not at all what I imagined. I’m normally so hard on myself. But being a decade away from it, made the experience kinda, weirdly, lovely.’

No doubt fans would love a running commentary of the Justice League #SnyderCut – for four hours.

Green Lantern wasn’t all bad as it’s where Ryan met wife Blake while filming on-set and, 10 years later, the rest is history.
