Super Nintendo World theme park finally opens in Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto wants you to go

After numerous coronavirus enforced delays the Super Nintendo World theme park is finally open to ordinary visitors.

Video game release schedules have slowed to a crawl in the last few months but generally the gaming industry has weathered the coronavirus a lot better than many others, especially the theme park business.

A theme park is not an obvious place to want to go in the middle of a pandemic but just days after Disneyland announced it’s re-opening, Super Nintendo World in Japan has also had its official launch.

Although daily numbers are currently limited to 10,000 people, half that of before the coronavirus, the park is now open to everyone, albeit with lots of safety restrictions.

Shigeru Miyamoto himself attended the opening and according to Famitsu said that he hoped ‘everyone in the world’ would visit the park once the pandemic is over.

It’s certainly going to be somewhere every Nintendo fan will want to visit, with plans for similar parks in the US and elsewhere in Asia still years away.

Super Nintendo World is only a part of the large Universal Studios Japan complex in Osaka and despite the name is currently only themed around Super Mario, with an interactive Mario Kart attraction and the chance to ride a yoshi.

The whole park is decked out with interactive objects though, that recognise the special bracelet you’re given in order to earn coins and activate displays.

A Donkey Kong area is already under construction but how else the Nintendo is going to be put in Super Nintendo World is yet to be announced. Will there be a new Zelda section? Animal Crossing? Splatoon? Much will depend on how popular the park is, but somehow that doesn’t seem likely to be a problem.
