Sony has unveiled new next gen VR controllers and they look to be a major improvement on the aging PlayStation Move.

PlayStation VR remains one of the best designed headsets on the market and great value for money, with a wide range of excellent games. Unfortunately though its controllers suck, they’ve always sucked, and now they’re finally going away.

The PlayStation Move controllers weren’t originally even designed for the PlayStation VR but instead created for the PlayStation 3, as Sony’s answer to the Wii remote.

That means they’re now two generations old, so it’s a great relief to find that Sony has just announced new next gen controllers for their promised new PlayStation 5 headset.

The next gen headset hasn’t been revealed yet but the controllers look like much more modern designs, similar to those for the Oculus Rift and other PC headsets.

Not only should they be much more accurate and reliable, but they also use features pioneered by the DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

In addition to that, the controllers can detect the position of your fingers without you having to press anything, which will allow you to make gestures and move your hands in a VR world almost as you would in reality.

The controllers, which don’t seem to have been given any specific name yet, will also be tracked by the new VR headset through a ‘tracking ring’ at the bottom of the controller.

As for buttons, the left controller has one analogue stick, triangle and square buttons, L1 and L2, and Create button. The right also has an analogue stick, plus the cross and circle buttons, R1 and R2, and the Options button. L1 and R1 are described as the ‘grip’ buttons and are presumably the ones lower down the controller in the photos.

There’s no indication of a release date for the controllers but apparently developers only have prototype versions at the moment, which implies the real thing will be a while and not necessarily before the new headset.
