Carol McGiffin doubles down on coronavirus criticism as she calls for lockdown to be lifted
Carol McGiffin has doubled down on her criticism of the response to coronavirus, stating the ‘country lost its collective marbles’.
The Loose Women star has always been vocal about her thoughts on the response to the global health scare, previously branding lockdown ‘unnecessary’.
Scientific experts have previously maintained that the lockdown measures saved thousands of lives in the country – with some stating the restrictions should have been introduced earlier.
Taking to Twitter, the 61-year-old recalled an earlier appearance on the show, where she condemned the idea of shutting the country down.
‘One year ago today I was on @loosewomen for the final time before the destruction of life as we knew it began,’ she said.
‘On that show I said we SHOULD NOT lock down because it won’t work, the virus won’t go away, and it will never end. No one agreed with me and I was widely criticised.
‘Now, I won’t say “I told you so” because I wish I had been wrong and the country hadn’t lost its collective marbles over a virus with a 99+% survival rate but it did.
‘What scares me most is that it’s not over even now and with every day that passes, more freedom is lost, normal seems like a fantasy, and so much damage has been done by these endless and largely unnecessary restrictions that it seems almost irreparable.’
‘And yet, too many people still support more of the same and worse, believing that it’s all worth it if it means we “beat” the virus,’ she continued.
‘Well, I hate to break it to them but that’s not going to happen because that’s not the point of any of it. This is no longer about a virus any more than the vaccine is about protecting those who need it.
‘And the only proof you need for that is all around as in still locked down.
‘So, in an effort to be optimistic I’m going to make another prediction that soon, the people who can’t see what some of us have seen from the start will open their eyes and join the enlightened who say #EndTheLockdowns #EnoughIsEnough #NoNewNormal and this time I hope I AM right.’
The death toll in the UK has risen to more than 120,000 since the pandemic started, with much of the public still facing restrictions.
The UK broke its record for the most coronavirus vaccines administered in a single day, with more than 660,000 jabs given out on Thursday.
Every adult will be offered a first dose by the end of July, Boris Johnson has said.
The prime minister previously offered a roadmap out of lockdown, with the last legal restrictions set to be lifted on June 21.
