The original cast of The Mighty Ducks have been confirmed to reunite in an episode of the Disney Plus remake.

The news was confirmed on Friday by Entertainment Weekly, that stars including Elden Henson, Matt Doherty, Vincent LaRusso, Marguerite Moreau, Garret Henson, and Justin Wong are returning to their roles as Fulton, Averman, Adam, Connie, Guy, and Kenny in the sixth episode.

Emilio Estevez, who played Coach Gordon Bombay, had already been revealed to be returning to reprise his role in the remake.

The show’s creator, Steven Brill, said of the reunion of the original stars: ‘It starts with a fun encounter Coach Bombay has with Fulton – they have an interesting run-in on the street, reminiscent of ways they used to meet each other back in the early days.

‘This chance meeting between Bombay and Fulton leads to a bigger story.’

Elden added: ‘There is a Spirit of the Ducks gala where they’re honouring the current coach and the history of the Ducks and that’s what brings us all back together.’

The Disney Plus series will follow 13-year-old Evan, played by Brady Noon, who gets cut from the ice hockey team as he is too inexperienced on the rink, but he and his mother Alex (Lauren Graham) soon find players and a coach and set up their own team in the junior division.

The reunion episode will also see Fulton invite Coach Bombay to a low-key reunion at a pizza parlour but things will go ‘off the rails’ quickly.

Filming for the remake was due to take place last winter and be finished by late spring, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, resuming filming in September and finishing in December.

Development had first been announced in 2018, with the writer and producer of the original 1992 film returning to come up with the idea for the new series.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is due for release on Disney Plus on March 26.
