The Last Cruise will take the viewers all the way back to the initial start of the coronavirus pandemic as we follow the ill-fated Diamond Princess cruise chip.
The HBO documentary follows the journey of the ship and its passengers as they set sail from Yokohama, Japan on January 20 last year.
By February 26, the cruise ship accounted for more than half of all the documented Covid-19 cases outside of China.
In fact, the ship ultimately accounted for the first citizens of Argentina, Israel, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, and New Zealand to test positive for the virus.
Over 700 people on board were infected with many being rushed out in ambulances when possible, leaving the rest stuck on the ship and unable to leave their rooms.
Directed by Hannah Olson, the project uses first-person accounts of those on-board the ship as we watch their real-time fear with each passing day.
In the trailer, passengers can be seen eating lavish meals, exercising at group events, and having the usual vacation fun when suddenly people in masks appear.
That’s when the shocking news is announced through the overhead speakers by the captain: ‘Please be advised that two guests tested positive for coronavirus.’
Things start to get worse and worse as the length of time to quarantine increases and people in hazmat suits appear onboard.
It gets to the point that food is left outside of each person’s room, and people begin to exit the ship on stretchers.
In one interview, a member of the ship’s essential worker team fears their safety won’t be as valued as that of the passengers.
Indeed, staff had been forced to stay on board the ship when the outbreak began and they had to continue working in the unprecedented circumstances.
It all plays out like a horror movie, but the scariest part has to be the fact this all took place in real life. Just one year ago!
The Last Cruise drops on HBO and HBO Max from March 30.
