American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has unveiled the new show title ahead of the upcoming release of season 10.

Series nine of the popular anthology horror aired a year and a half ago and fans have patiently been awaiting the next installment.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Ryan revealed season 10 will be called American Horror Story: Double Feature.

A teaser video said: ‘Two horrifying stories… one season. One by the sea… One by the sand. More to come…’

Co-creator Ryan shared a new poster for the programme in November last year.

It features a close-up picture of someone’s mouth with red lips and sharp, pointed teeth.

The phrase ‘AHS10 FX’ is tattoed onto the tongue, suggesting the next AHS will air on US television channel FX.

The official Instagram account for the show shared the same image, with the caption: ‘Look sharp.’

Leslie Grossman, who has starred in American Horror Story since series seven, commented: ‘Ouch.’

Ryan teased back: ‘You should be very afraid.’

Fans have speculated the new season will feature vampires or aliens but many have concluded it will have something to do with a sea creature of some kind.

Many people have expressed their views on social media that it could focus on mermaids or sirens, creatures who, according to mythology, lured sailors to their doom with their enchanting voices.

After sharing a picture of a beach on Instagram with the caption ‘American Horror Story clue,’ one person remarked: ‘Sirens?! Mermaids?!’

Another follower posted: ‘Basically Sarah Paulson playing a fish.’

Filming on the project was stopped in March last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And Ryan later warned that the theme have to be scrapped due to Covid.

He told The Wrap that filming ‘was dependent on a very specific moment’, describing the show as being ‘weather dependent’.

The producer added: ‘So now, I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m going to do next with that show, I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another or wait ‘til next year to shoot this one.’

In 2019 it was announced several former American Horror Story stars would be returning for the tenth season.

Favourites Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, Finn Wittrock, Frances Conroy and Angelica Ross are all confirmed to appear alongside newcomer Macaulay Culkin.
