Gillian McKeith praised those taking part in a march through central London to protest lockdown measures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The You Are What You Eat host has been vocal against the ongoing government restrictions during the global health scare.

Taking to Twitter, the star shared snaps from the march, stating that she was ‘proud’ of those who were also on their feet.

‘It is time to stand up. And London has finally come through,’ she captioned the post.

‘London takes back freedom. Proud to be a Londoner…

‘London shows some muscle FINALLY,’ she wrote alongside another picture.

‘THOUSANDS demand an end to the lockdowns, an end to destroying businesses and livelihood, an end to the madness….#EndTheLockdown #londonprotests #antilockdownprotest.

‘They have come in their THOUSANDS. London has woken up from a deep slumber.

‘NOW it is time to demand freedom. #londonprotest  #EndTheLockdown.’

However, the posts were widely criticised across Twitter, with some followers branding her tweets ‘mind-numbingly daft’.

Flooding the replies, one posted: ‘Freedom? What’s freedom got to do with prioritising lives in a pandemic? What is it with these people.

‘We’ve got a roadmap for coming out of lockdown. So self-indulgent.’

‘Ohh for crying out loud the vaccinations meant things would open up a bit,’ another fumed.

‘This whole stunt could cause the numbers to go up again!’

As a Twitter user added: ‘I’m equally proud to be a Londoner having no part of this idiocy.’

The death toll in the UK has risen to more than 120,000 since the pandemic started, with much of the public still facing lockdown restrictions.

Scientific experts have previously maintained that these measures have saved lives – with some stating lockdown should have been introduced earlier.

Prime minister Boris Johnson previously offered a roadmap out of restrictions, with the last legal restrictions set to be lifted on June 21.

Gillian wasn’t the only famous face praising today’s march, as Laurence Fox was pictured also in the crowd.

Stopping for an interview, the actor hit back at measures – as well as the extra powers offered to police to clampdown on protests.

‘It’s despicable, they’re not paid to stop our peaceful right to protest,’ he said.

‘We live in a democracy, we don’t live in a place where they [can] shut us down. It’s not right, it’s not what they’re paid for, it’s not what we want from them.

‘They need to police crime, not this.’
