Nicki Minaj’s mother has filed a $150million (£108million) lawsuit against the man suspected of killing the rapper’s father, it has been reported.

Robert Maraj died in February at the age of 64 after being struck by a vehicle while walking along a road in Long Island, New York.

He was taken to hospital ‘in a critical condition’ but succumbed to his injuries.

Nassau County Police later held a press conference announcing they had arrested a man, Charles Polevich, in connection with the incident. According to police, the 71-year-old turned himself in and was charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence.

Legal documents show that Nicki’s mother Carol Maraj has filed a lawsuit at the state Supreme Court to sue Polevich.

Lawyer Ben Crump confirmed that he and another attorney, Paul Napoli, had filed a $150m lawsuit in the suspected hit-and-run case.

Crump wrote in an Instagram post: ‘He was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident on February 12, 2021, when he was struck by a car being driven by Charles Polevich as Mr. Maraj walked along a Long Island road. After striking Maraj, Polevich left the accident scene and did not call for emergency services or render aid to Maraj.

‘He was not only irresponsible and negligent, but more concerned about running away and hiding than seeking help.’

Crump added: ‘Polevich’s behavior was criminal, cowardly, and immoral. We will hold him responsible for his reckless actions that led to Robert Maraj’s death.’

During the press conference last month, police said were able to track the car to Polevich’s home in Mineola using various ‘pieces of video’.

They clamed Polevich, who had no criminal record, ‘covered up’ the car in his garage and ‘did things to alter’ them being able to locate it.

Detective Steven Fitzpatrick said that Polevich ‘was absolutely aware of what happened’.

‘He got out of the car and he looked at the deceased, got into his car, and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man. He went home and secluded the vehicle.

‘He’s well aware of what he did,’ Detective Fitzpatrick said.
