BBC clear up what CHIS means as Line of Duty fans make same rude mistake
Line of Duty gave fans another brand new acronym to get their heads around as series six kicked off.
In a surprisingly slow burn episode, viewers were introduced to DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) who is trying to crack an unsolved murder case.
It was revealed that DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) had decided to move on from AC-12 after Superintendent Hastings was in the frame for being corrupt in series five, and DS Steve Arnott was also thinking about jumping ship.
Viewers also saw Joanne have a blazing row with girlfriend PC Farida Jatri (Anneika Rose) before moving out of their shared home.
Plus a suspect in the murder of Gail Vella (Andi Osho) had to be released after confusion about his real identity.
What stood out to many people watching though was the introduction of the term CHIS, which was used – very frequently – by the characters this week.
Thankfully the BBC were on hand to clear things up, as the continuity announcer explained as the episode concluded: ‘CHIS if you’re wondering is a Covert Human Intelligence Source’, directing people to find out more lingo online.
It was an explanation that was needed as for the entire hour people rudely thought they heard the word ‘jizz’, with the slang term trending on Twitter.
Thanks to the Beeb for clearing that up.
Other terms over the last five series that we’ve had to get to grips with (not including Hastings’ many sayings) include OCG (Organised Crime Gang), AFO (Authorised Firearms Officer) and DIR (digital interview recorder).
With the episode ending on what appeared to be a moment of romantic tension between Kate and Joanne, we’ll have to wait an entire week before we find out what’s coming next.
