Line Of Duty series 6 kicks off tonight with new cast member Kelly Macdonald joining the fray as Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson, a senior investigating officer of an unsolved murder.

Joanne’s unconventional conduct soon raises suspicions at AC-12 and she soon has Vicky McClure, Martin Compston, and Adrian Dunbar’s characters on her back.

Kelly, 45, has had an illustrious career both in television and in film and viewers will no doubt have seen her on-screen before her Line Of Duty debut.

What has Kelly Macdonald been in as BBC drama returns?

Kelly’s career kickstarted with the 1996 film Trainspotting, where she played Diane, the underage seductress to Ewan McGregor’s Renton.

At the time, she was 20-years-old and was prompted to audition after seeing a leaflet advertising an open casting session.

She later reprised her character in the sequel, T2 Trainspotting, in 2017.

Following Trainspotting, Kelly went on to star as Evangeline in the 2005 film Nanny McPhee.

In 2007, she was nominated for a Bafta for best actress in a supporting role for her part in No Country For Old Men, in which she starred alongside the likes of Woody Harrelson and Tommy Lee Jones.

Kelly also voiced the lead character, Princess Merida, in the 2012 animation Brave.

Over in TV, Kelly played Margaret Thompson in the HBO crime drama Boardwalk Empire for all five seasons from 2010 until it ended in 2014.

She received an Emmy Award nomination and two Golden Globe nominations in 2011

In 2016, took on the lead role in Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror episode Hated in the Nation, which saw detectives investigate a spate of deaths targeting the subjects of social media trolling.

Since then, she had a main role in BBC drama Giri/Haji, which aired in 2019, and she appeared in The Victim that same year.

Line Of Duty airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
