Kate Garraway makes home wheelchair accessible for husband Derek Draper’s return: ‘He has no muscle left’
Kate Garraway has begun converting her home to suit her husband Derek Draper’s needs after spending a year in hospital.
The Good Morning Britain presenter is hoping to have Derek, 53, discharged from the hospital where he has fought coronavirus while being placed in an induced coma.
In her upcoming ITV documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star details how she has made their North London property wheelchair accessible in preparation for his return.
This includes installing a hospital bed in their lounge to accommodate Derek likely not being able to use the stairs as Covid-19 has damaged his body, causing him to lose eight-stone and leaving him with holes in his heart and lungs.
Opening up about his physical changes, Kate told The Mirror: ‘Derek is physically very affected. His legs are like sticks, he has no muscle left. In terms of his movement, he’s physically affected.’
Kate and Derek live with their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.
Doctors have told Kate that it is ‘highly unlikely’ Derek will make a good recovery, but could make a ‘reasonable recovery’, which they described as ‘being able to hold a hairbrush’ by himself.

Finding Derek promises to be emotional viewing and will feature Kate, 53, detailing the moment he told her he couldn’t go on any longer.
‘Derek had been drifting in and out of consciousness and when he said that, it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me he was still in there. Even though it was terrible to think his spirits were so low,’ she says.
In a previously released teaser for the harrowing film, Kate explains: ‘Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated that’s lived.
‘Is he going to be able to come back? Or will he be alive, but no longer the person he was?’ she goes on to ask, sadly adding: ‘You shouldn’t have to think like that.’
A heartbreaking clip is then shown of Kate screaming in pain, saying: ‘Derek I miss you!’
Viewers will also see the first photos of Derek laying in his hospital bed.
In addition the documentary, Kate is set to release her book The Power Of Hope where she’ll share more of her family’s ordeal.
Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
