Lana Del Rey hits back at critics by making low key announcement of new ‘album’ Rock Candy Sweet
Lana Del Rey appears to have announced a new album after hitting back at a critical article about her following the release of Chemtrails Over The Country Club.
In a now-deleted message on her Instagram Stories she blasted the piece – titled Lana Del Rey Can’t Qualify Her Way Out of Being Held Accountable – for ‘reminding me that my career was built on cultural appropriation and glamorising domestic abuse’.
The Born To Die singer added: ‘I will continue those thoughts on my next record on June 1 titled Rock Candy Sweet.’
This was then followed up on her main Instagram page, in the form of a close up pic of Lana and the album title at the bottom.
She added in the caption: ‘ROCK CANDY 🍭 SWEET June 1’.
It’s possible that Lana’s response could have been simply a sarcastic clap back at the article, and given that Chemtrails Over The Country Club only came out this month, it will be interesting to see whether the new record (if that’s what it is) will make the June release date.
In January the 35-year-old was at the centre of bizarre social media backlash after defending the diversity on the artwork for her seventh album.
Posting the cover, which shows her with a group of her female friends, on Instagram she shared that she has ‘always been extremely inclusive without even trying to’, adding that ‘my best friends are rappers, my boyfriends have been rappers’.
She continued: ‘My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital (sic), I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it.’
The High By The Beach star also sparked a race row in 2019 after seemingly calling out artists of colour – including Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Kehlani and Doja Cat – for getting to sing about ‘f***ing and cheating’ while she apparently gets accused of glamorising abuse.
After coming under fire she dismissed the accusations of racism as ‘bulls**t’.
