Clive Myrie has been announced as the new host of Mastermind after John Humphrys’ decision to step down.

The iconic TV presenter recently revealed he has decided to call time on his 18-year run on the BBC quiz show – which marks its 50th anniversary next year – and now his replacement has been confirmed.

Clive is a BBC news journalist and regular presenter on BBC News at Six and Ten since 2010, as well as working on the BBC News Channel.

He said in a statement: ‘What a privilege it is to take on this new role. Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson formed the backdrop to my youth, and now to be at the helm is a dream come true. I’m excited and can’t wait to get stuck in.’

He becomes the fifth host in the show’s history following Magnusson, Peter Snow, Clive Anderson and Humphrys.

Clive recently won the RTS Television Journalism award for best presenter, with one judge noting his ‘versatile, measured, compelling, relaxed but reassuring and empathetic’ style.

Kate Phillipas – BBC’s Director of Entertainment – commented: ‘Clive will be a superb host, witty, wise and with a wicked sense of humour, he’s a consummate interrogator who also understands the fear involved when facing a barrage of questions in the spotlight.’

Jimmy Mulville at Hat Trick Productions and Hindsight Productions’ David Young, added: ‘Clive was always at the top of our list to step into the host’s shoes, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that he is going to lead us into a new era of this iconic show.’

The new host will settle into the famous chair this summer when filming on the new series starts in Belfast in July, with the show set to be back on air later this year.

Meanwhile, John Humphrys’ final episodes will be broadcast in April.

Announcing his departure in a newspaper column last month, the 77-year-old star said: ‘When the present series comes to an end in March there will be someone else in the chair.

‘I started 18 years ago – a very long time in the ephemeral world of showbiz. Now, after more than 750 shows, it really is time to finish.’

Plenty of stars including The Chase’s Shaun Wallace put their names out their for the roll.

Mastermind airs on BBC One.
