The Simpsons ending in 2023? After marking 700 episodes executive producer Al Jean warns: ‘I don’t know how much further we can go’

The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean has suggested the longest-running animated series of all time in the US could come to an end following the upcoming two seasons. 

Last night, The Simpsons marked its 700th episode and has already been renewed for a further two seasons, keeping the cartoon going to 2023 at the very least. 

However, Jean has warned after that, which would mark 757 episodes of The Simpsons, it could be time we left Springfield as we know it. 

‘We’re going to definitely do 757,’ he told Variety. ‘I wouldn’t say that’s the end but I don’t know how much further we can go.’

However, he’s confident Lisa, Bart, Maggie, Marge, and Homer Simpsons will never ‘disappear’ and live on in various guises.

‘As soon as they cancel us, they’ll reboot us,’ he said. ‘I’m confident after I’m gone, there’ll be some sort of Simpsons coming. 

‘It’s too ubiquitous to think that it’ll just disappear.’ 

However, he’s since tweeted:

So who knows if it will ever end.

Jean doesn’t sound confident The Simpsons will reach the unfathomable milestone of 1000 episodes – which would take another 12 years – but for now creator Matt Groening has promised ‘lots of big surprises’ coming up over the course of the next two chapters. 

‘Homer will lose a hair, Milhouse will get contact lenses and Bart will celebrate his tenth birthday for the thirty-third time,’ he added. 

The Simpsons’ legacy is unbeatable. From its wild predictions, a who’s who of cameo appearances, and even boosting the English Dictionary, it’s fair to say few TV series will ever quite have the same impact.
