Ellen DeGeneres recalls rushing Portia de Rossi to hospital for emergency appendectomy: ‘She was in so much pain’

Ellen DeGeneres has share details about driving her wife Portia de Rossi to hospital for emergency surgery, which took place over the weekend.

The comedian revealed all on Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show as she opened up about the events which led to her actress wife having an emergency appendectomy.

The 63-year-old recalled: ‘It started on Friday in the evening around 7.30. I’m sitting there watching TV with Portia and Portia said, “I’m not feeling well, I want to go to bed.”‘

After getting out of bed later in the evening to find Portia ‘on the floor on all fours’, Ellen immediately took her to medical help.

She explained: ‘I rush her to the ER and we’re driving and she’s in so much pain and I’m worried about her and I don’t know what’s wrong.’

‘You know I grew up Christian science so my best guess was a demon,’ she joked before adding: ‘They do the CT scan and they still weren’t sure because there was a lot of inflammation going on. Then they said we have to admit her to the hospital and they won’t let me stay ’cause of COVID.’

Ellen got a call the next morning to reveal that de Rossi would need an emergency appendectomy.

The comedian continued: ‘I am happy to report that Portia is feeling much better now. She came home late yesterday. Not all of her, she left her appendix at the hospital.’

Appendicitis is a common condition in which the lining of the appendix is blocked and becomes inflamed.

It can cause intense pain, and if not treated quickly — typically with surgery to remove the appendix — the organ could burst.

Ellen and Portia tied the knot in 2008 after same-sex marriage became legal in California.

The pair recently did a joint interview in which they opened up about supporting each other amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which Ellen tested positive for last year.
