Kate Garraway ‘told she can get out of Derek Draper marriage’ as he fights for life in hospital
Kate Garraway was left stunned when somebody told her she could ‘get out’ of her marriage to Derek Draper – as he continues to fight for his life in hospital.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 53, has been supporting her husband as much as she can after coronavirus caused him to end up in a coma.
More than a year on, and Derek, 53, is still in a serious condition, with his muscles depleted from being unable to move, and a prognosis for his future still uncertain.
Facing potentially a lifetime of caring for him, Kate reveals in documentary Finding Derek tonight that someone told her it would be OK to walk away.
‘Somebody said to me the other day, “You are allowed to say this isn’t what I signed up for and get out”,’ she explained.
‘I was like, “Oh my God.” I mean, I know they meant it weirdly kindly, as if almost giving me license. But I said, “I can’t think that! He’s in there!”’

Kate later admits that she has considered quitting GMB in order to take care of Derek full-time.
‘Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors in the lung hospital has treated that has lived,’ she said.
‘His kidneys have failed, his liver has failed, his heart is being supported with medicine.
‘So the best way of coping with that is to think, “What have I got control over?” and I guess that is making sure the children feel okay.’
The pair have been married since 2005 and have two children together – daughter Darcey, 15, and 11-year-old son Billy.
While he no longer has the virus, it has left him with organ damage, including lung issues and holes in his heart, and diabetes, which he did not have before.
Due to the changing guidelines as the pandemic continues, the TV star has been unable to see her husband since before Christmas.
Kate has since revealed that doctors had told her it is ‘highly unlikely’ that Derek would make a good recovery, but could make a ‘reasonable recovery’, which they described as ‘being able to hold a hairbrush’ by himself.
Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
