Paloma Faith fears her career is over after having second child: ‘It feels demoralising’

Paloma Faith has revealed her fears that her music career is essentially over after giving birth to her second child. 

The Only Love Can Hurt Like This singer welcomed her second child with boyfriend Leyman Lahcine in February – they were already parents to a four-year-old. 

In her upcoming BBC Two documentary Paloma Faith: As I Am, the singer recalls an awkward meeting she had with record label bosses where she revealed her plans to have more children. However, their response wasn’t what she expected. 

Paloma says according to The Sun: ‘I did have a dinner (with them) and there were signs of concern when I mentioned that I’d like another child. 

‘It was uncomfortable. It’s not a very child-friendly industry. It’s OK with one but I feel like two then becomes something different. I feel like I’ve cheated death in a way, in terms of the death of my career, with one. And I feel like maybe you can’t cheat death twice.’ 

The 39-year-old admitted it feels like ‘the end of an era for [her]’ as she was more creative when she first entered the music industry, but feels now her career has ‘taken a trajectory that has been geared more towards commercialism’. 

The Voice UK judge explained: ‘It feels demoralising. It’s a moment of feeling nearly 40 is what it is. I’ve had a good run by modern standards – 10 years – but I need to think about how I’m going to reinvent myself.

‘I’m glad I’m doing Pennyworth. Maybe I just need to focus on acting and then sing for love and do more projects that aren’t so commercial. I might enjoy it then.’ 

The documentary, filmed back in 2018, also features Paloma opening up about her suicidal thoughts while struggling with jet lag. 

She says: ‘I’ve had really bad experiences coming to Australia. The first time I ever experienced jet lag, I got a bit disoriented and mentally unstable and had to cancel the tour. I contemplated suicide.’
