Former Teammate Rates Michael Jordan’s ‘The Last Dance’ as ‘Accurate’ But Also ‘Pledging’

Michael Jordan is one of the greatest players of all time. The Chicago Bulls guard entered the NBA during the early 1980s and took the league by storm. During his stint in the NBA, the league exploded in popularity, and Jordan was at the forefront of that expansion. And his success with the Chicago Bulls, winning six out of eight NBA championships in the 90s was the biggest indictment.

Former NBA All-Star Charles Oakley spoke on his podcast recently about last year’s critically acclaimed ‘The Last Dance’ documentary, which focussed on the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. Oakley responded that there was a degree of truth to the documentary, but some of it was a little bit embellishment and pledging toward Jordan.

“It was 70-30, 80-20. It was a little accurate and a little pledging. The athletes who really got a lot of shine and overplay, a lot of guys tried to play the tough role were really tough. My thing with playing with Michael Jordan is its just like a dream come true. A lot of guys act like he threw them under the bus, he didn’t throw them under the bus.” 

Jordan challenged with Last Dance project

Oakley added that he could understand why people may have had problems with the documentary. However, making the documentary was also a challenge. There were so many people and ideas that Jordan could not control or anticipate, and he had to take that risk. Oakley said it was like trying to make a song with instruments he didn’t know how to play.

“It just happened, and my thinking of the way he got everybody into it. It was like doing a song, he’s bringing 10 pieces together and had to do a song in one day, without rehearsing. He brought all these different pieces and attitudes together, don’t know what this person, that person was about but he did it.”

What did you think about ‘The Last Dance’? People are quite split on the way certain players were portrayed in the documentary. Jordan’s second in command in Chicago, Scottie Pippen, was also unhappy with the way the documentary showcased him. However, most felt that they were accurately representing the team and the era of the NBA.
