Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid has said Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper is ‘very proud’ of his wife following last night’s ITV documentary Finding Derek.

Former political adviser Derek, 53, remains in hospital after being admitted with coronavirus symptoms in March last year and the new film detailed his ongoing illness and featured Kate speaking to people suffering long Covid, NHS staff and other experts.

Talking about the reaction on today’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Susanna said of her colleague’s partner: ‘He is so proud of her and he would be so proud of her doing this and what she’s doing with this documentary.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, Susanna’s co-host Ben Shephard added: ‘I think we can very rightly be very proud as well and understand that all we want for you is to know who Kate is.’

He continued: ‘Thank you for all the extraordinary messages… every single one of those messages she has read and she takes some sort of comfort and support from.’

Celebrities shared messages of support for Kate after watching the powerful documentary, including Piers Morgan who wrote: ‘ Love you [Kate],’ before adding a quote from Nelson Mandela, which read: ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’

‘We’ve been waiting a long time to speak to you,’ Kate tells her husband as he cries from his hospital bed.

‘I’m so proud of you, I’m so proud of you,’ Kate enthused. ‘You are just so brilliant and every day we’re getting closer to coming home, being with the kids, you’re brilliant. Well done!’

Another scene saw her recall being told by Derek’s doctors that he was the most seriously ill person they had seen who remained alive.

Kate earlier thanked fans for their support.

‘Thank you so much for all your lovely comments – your support means so much to me and others,’ she wrote.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
