Martin Kemp has supported his son Roman Kemp’s career path and insists he didn’t open ‘a single door’ in order for him to become successful in his own right.

The Spandau Ballet star couldn’t be prouder of Roman, who has established himself as a Radio One DJ and presenter, but said he wanted to make sure his son did so in his own right.

After Roman, who received high praise for his look into male depression last week with documentary Our Silent Emergency, admitted he sometimes felt he ‘didn’t deserve’ his success and that it was down to his dad, Martin was quick to clear that up.

Speaking ahead of their latest project together, DNA Journey, Martin said: ‘I think when Roman first started out, I was very aware not to make it look like I was pushing Roman in any shape or form.

‘I never did it at all, I never opened one single door.

‘I never opened one single door for him but now obviously Roman entertains the nation for four hours live on the radio every morning.

‘He has a right to stand up on his own. He’s great at what he does, so it is a pleasure to work with him.’

Since Roman found success, placing third on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in 2019 and forging his own path in the spotlight, the pair have been seen on screen together, becoming favourites on Celebrity Gogglebox thanks to their close bond.

They now host weekend chat show Martin and Roman’s Weekend Best on ITV, and will be delving into their ancestry on DNA Journey tonight.

Roman has also said he’s found peace with his worries about living in his father’s shadow, and said that it will ultimately provide a time capsule for his own kids in the future.

‘I can’t wait to be able to show my grandkids and all of those types of things and say, “Look what we did and this is what your grandad was like and this is what our relationship was like,”’ he said.

DNA Journey with Martin and Roman Kemp airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
