As we eagerly await the re-opening of pubs, please know there is some delight still to be had inside as Hugh Grant became Twitter’s favourite meme this week.

A spunky, little social media game has started and the actor is front and centre as people put forth their own play on his name.

Turns out, a lot rhymes with ‘Hugh’.

It all started earlier this week when an author started a thread of punchlines to the Notting Hill star’s name, with one of the first ones appearing to be: ‘Hugh Grant is having trouble eating tough beef jerky: Chew Grant.’

From then it was on like Donkey Kong as numerous punters got in on the act so much so Hugh’s name was soon trending on social media.

Comedian Anthony Kapfer chimed in: ‘Hugh grant but tilted: Askew grant,’ while singer and presenter David Campbell wrote: ‘Hugh Grant but he is busting for a wee: Loo Grant.’

Classic.

Aussie comedian Dan Ilic added: ‘Hugh Grant, sitting in a 66° hot tub stewing in his own juices for 4 hours — Sous-vide Grant,’ as Rufus Hound went all kinds of onomatopoeia on us: ‘Hugh Grant, but an airhorn…

‘HYOOOOO-HY-HY-HYOOOOO Grant.’

Not even organisations could resist the urge to have a laugh online, as Paramount+ chimed in: ‘Hugh Grant checking out everything coming to Paramount+: Queue Grant,’ while FacebookWatch added: ‘Hugh Grant judging Drag Queens on their Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent: Ru Grant.’

While the Four Weddings And A Funeral star is yet to address this hilarious way we’re all spending our time in the final throes of lockdown as we know it, he’s instead busy using his channel to call out the Government.

Hugh responded to an article that claimed a firm linked to the Convervative party was awarded millions in multiple Covid-19 contracts.

He wrote: ‘Always heartwarming to watch this government exploit a pandemic to enrich their friends and donors.’

Which, incidentally, was also drawn into the game, as John Spiers wrote: ‘Hugh Grant accuses government of “exploiting pandemic to enrich their friends”.

‘… True Grant!’

Oh internet, less trolls more memes.
