Bill Bailey was left absolutely horrified when a contestant on new BBC show This Is My House decided to lick a stain on a sofa during the pandemic in a bid to win the competition.
The premise of the programme, which is hosted by Stacey Dooley and boasts a panel of celebrity judges, is that there are four people who are going by the same name and all claiming to live in the same house.
If the judges guess the real homeowner correctly, that contestant will be awarded a £1,000 cash prize.
Throughout the one-hour show, the contestants each try their best to convince the judges that they are the real homeowner.
However, on the launch episode of the show, one player, dubbed ‘Fern 2’ out of the four Ferns, went to extreme lengths to demonstrate just how comfortable she feels in her home.
While in the living room of the house with Fern 1 and host Stacey, both Ferns admitted that they hate the L-shaped sofa.
Fern 2 explained that her dislike for the sofa was why she decided to let the stains on the piece of furniture ‘just stay there’.
When Fern 1 protested there being any stains on the sofa, Fern 2 responded: ‘Oh really?’ before pointing at a mark on the couch and stating: ‘What do you call that? Peach Frube.’
As a confused Fern 1 asked what a Frube is, Fern 2 brought out the big guns – by bending down and actually licking the stain to prove her point.
Because of course, what better way to prove you’re in your home than by licking an unsanitary surface.
Judges Bill, Emily Atack, Judi Love and Jamali Maddix and guest panelist Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen watched the peculiar turn of events unfold on a TV screen with utter disgust.
‘That is her house. That is her house,’ comedian Jamali stated emphatically.
‘What just happened?’ Strictly Come Dancing 2020 winner Bill asked in astonishment.
‘You’re quite traumatised, aren’t you?’ Changing Rooms star Laurence said, to which Bill replied: ‘I am. Licking a sofa on television?!’
While speaking to the camera, Fern 1 commented on her fellow contestant’s behaviour, remarking: ‘How much does Fern 2 want this that she’s willing to lick someone else’s furniture in a pandemic?’
However, in the end it turned out that Fern 2 *is* actually the owner of the house, although she failed to convince the judges as they incorrectly guessed Fern 4 as their final answer.
Several viewers said that Fern 2’s licking of the sofa was the deciding factor when trying to guess which Fern was legit.
‘It was obvious it was Fern 2 when she pointed out the sofa stain when she wasn’t even that close and then licked it and yes I just spent an hour watching #thisismyhouse,’ one person tweeted.
‘I’m going for Fern 2 #thisismyhouse anyone that licks a sofa, got to be,’ someone else said before the results were revealed.
This Is My House returns next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
