Simon McCoy shocked fans as he left the BBC after 18 years and his partner Emma Samms made sure to show her support on the newsreader’s last day.

Simon, 59, confirmed his exit on Twitter, with many of his friends and colleagues sending the star their well-wishes as he moves on to new projects.

Emma marked the moment herself as she re-tweeted a GIF of Simon in action on BBC News as he wrapped up his final week for the broadcaster, while reaching for a box of tissues.

The press team for BBC News had originally shared it along with the tweet: ‘Tissues ready, it’s @BBCSimonMcCoy’s last day.’

Fans may recognise British actress Emma, who has made her name for herself in television both here in the UK and in the US.

Emma played Alexis’ daughter Fallon Carrington and also appeared in Dynasty spin-off The Colbys, as well as a two part Dynasty reunion series that aired in 1991. Dynasty has since been rebooted for Netflix and stars Elizabeth Gillies, Grant Show and Elaine Hendrix.

Since then, Emma has appeared on British screens in Holby City, Doctors and Casualty and her film credits include Terminal Voyage, The Little Unicorn and Vendetta.

At the time, Simon publicly spoke about his relationship with Emma and Emma confirmed they were an item while telling Daily Mail: ‘We are very happy together.’

He moved in with Emma at her home in the Cotswolds and sources hinted that marriage could be on the cards for the pair, with Emma later praising Simon for being ‘amazing’ after she came down with coronavirus.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, the TV star said of her partner: ‘Simon has been absolutely amazing, taking me to the hospital and waiting outside for hours, and just doing as much as he possibly could to help. He’s given me emotional support, too; I’ll never be able to thank him enough for his kindness.’

Has Simon McCoy been married before?

Yes, Simon has been married twice before. He shares a son Max, who was born in 1993, with his first wife and later married BBC South West newsreader Victoria Graham.

Simon and Victoria tied the knot in 2007 and were married for over a decade, before splitting in 2019. At the time of their split, Simon said: ‘It is very sad. All I would like to say is that I give Victoria my very best wishes for her future.’

Emma, meanwhile, has been married three times before.

She wed Bansi Nagji in 1991, but the pair split after a year. Emma was then married to second husband Tim Dillon between 1994 and 1995 and she wed third husband John Holloway, who she shares two children with, in 1996.

Will Simon McCoy be on GB News?

Following his sudden BBC exit, Simon confirmed that he will be joining brand new channel GB News, which is set to rival Sky News and BBC News when it launches.

Director of News and Programmes at GB News, John McAndrew, said of Simon’s addition to the presenting team: ‘Simon’s journalistic integrity, warmth and personality is a perfect fit for what we’re doing at GB News.

‘He’s a brilliant journalist with an exceptional ability to relate to people in an upbeat way so we’re keen to get him out from behind a desk and talking to people from all parts of the United Kingdom.’

Simon will front an afternoon programme on the channel and joins the presenting team alongside former Sky News anchor Colin Brazier and The Apprentice winner Michelle Dewberry.

GB News has been described as the biggest TV channel to launch in the UK since Sky News established 30 years ago.

The channel has financial backing from Discovery and instead of being a rolling news channel, it will broadcast individual programmes and news-based programmes built around its presenting team.

Speculation is mounting that Piers Morgan could also join the channel, following his shock exit from Good Morning Britain in March.
