Alex Beresford has been defended against trolls after returning as a Good Morning Britain presenter after Piers Morgan left the show.

Before Piers announced his exit, he clashed with Alex over his comments on Meghan Markle.

Afterwards, Alex took a short break from GMB, returning last week as the resident weatherman, and this week as a presenter alongside Kate Garraway.

Fans of Alex have taken to social media to defend him against trolls as he returns to the show, with many thrilled to see him back on their TVs.

One wrote: ‘If I’d known he was presenting on #GMTV I’d have turned the TV on. I love his gutsy attitude.’

‘Alex Beresford presenting GMB is exactly how I know this karma malarkey worketh!’ another added, while one more said: ‘Gosh Alex Beresford is born for #GMB presenting job. He’s smashing it this morning.’

Another hit back at the trolls, penning: ‘The only thing wrong about Alex Beresford presenting @GMB this morning is the amount of denial of all the blatant racists out there having an issue with it.

‘It’s NOT the first time he’s stepped in to present. And a what a fine job he’s doing.’

Alex’s co-star Kate threw her support behind him as he returned to the hosting panel.

After he praised her for her documentary about her husband Derek Draper’s coronavirus battle, Kate, 53, said: ‘And you’ve had tumultuous times, haven’t you? It’s lovely to have you here.’

‘It’s good to be back,’ Alex, 40, responded.

Piers left GMB earlier this month, after he received a record number of Ofcom complaints about his comments on the Duchess of Sussex.

During the show that day, he and Alex clashed over his remarks, with the 55-year-old storming off set.

‘I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme,’ Alex said at the time.

‘I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one and she cut you off… She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to.

‘Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.’

As a result, Piers stormed off the set saying he wouldn’t be ‘trashed’ on his own show.

In a statement afterwards, Alex said he never intended for Piers to quit – but he did want him to listen.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
