Bindi Irwin pays touching tribute to dad Steve Irwin with baby’s name as she gives birth to first child
Bindi Irwin has welcomed a baby girl with husband Chandler Powell.
The 22-year-old confirmed that she gave birth to her daughter Grace on her and Chandler’s first wedding anniversary on March 25.
The couple honoured Bindi’s late father Steve Irwin with the middle names Warrior Irwin, with Bindi saying the names were a tribute to her dad’s life as a ‘wildlife warrior’.
She wrote on Instagram: ‘March 25, 2021. Celebrating the two loves of my life. Happy first wedding anniversary to my sweetheart husband and day of birth to our beautiful daughter. ❤️ Grace Warrior Irwin Powell.
‘Our graceful warrior is the most beautiful light. Grace is named after my great-grandmother, and relatives in Chandler’s family dating back to the 1700s. Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior. Her last name is Powell and she already has such a kind soul just like her dad.
‘There are no words to describe the infinite amount of love in our hearts for our sweet baby girl. She chose the perfect day to be born and we feel tremendously blessed.’
Bindi shared a picture of her and Chandler cradling their daughter, as well as sharing a picture of a card next to a baby-gro, which revealed Grace was born at 5.52pm on March 25 and weighed 7lbs 7oz.
The conservationist had previously sparked speculation earlier in the week that she had given birth, but it seems her post about ‘her world’ was just a case of Bindi cherishing her bump.
Bindi is the eldest child of the late Steve Irwin, who died in 2006, and Terri Irwin; the couple are also parents to Robert, 17.
The Dancing With The Stars winner tied the knot with wakeboarder Chandler last year in a ceremony at Australia Zoo with no guests, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
At the time, she shared: ‘We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.
‘Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other.’
Crocodile Hunter Steve died aged 44 in 2006 when he was pierced in the chest by a stingray barb.
His family has carried on his legacy with wildlife conservation, and his wife Terri runs Australia Zoo.
