To the world, Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character Sherlock Holmes is perceived as one of the greatest detectives in fiction, helped by his trusted companion Dr John Watson.

But what if some of the crimes he delved into were actually being solved by a group of shrewd teenagers… as is the case in Netflix series The Irregulars?

In the new show, this is exactly what happens, with the young Londoners tasked by Dr Watson with getting to the bottom of supernatural mysteries that Sherlock will be attributed to.

But all is not as it seems with Sherlock, as the trailer for the drama ominously states in a voiceover that ‘Sherlock Holmes doesn’t exist anymore’.

So who is in the cast of The Irregulars and when is the fascinating new series set?

Who is in the cast of The Irregulars?

The ringleader of The Irregulars is the headstrong Bea, played by Curfew actor Thaddea Graham.

Bea’s younger sister, who she has taken care of since childhood, is Jessie, portrayed by Darci Shaw.

Other members of The Irregulars include Billy (Jojo Macari), the boisterous oldest member of the group; Spike (McKell David), who is light-hearted and a voice of reason; and Leopold (Chaos Walkings’ Harrison Osterfield), who is the newest member of the team.

Henry Lloyd-Thomas, who played Roger Davies in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, portrays Sherlock, while Royce Pierreson, who was in the fourth series of Line of Duty, plays Dr Watson.

John Wick actor Clarke Peters depicts Linen Man, Women in Love’s Olivia Grant plays Patricia Coleman-Jones, Mr Selfridge star Aidan McArdle portrays Inspector Lestrade and Sheila Atim, who was supposed to star in the cancelled Game of Thrones spin-off Bloodmoon, stars as Tooth Fairy.

When is The Irregulars set?

Just like the original incarnation of Sherlock, The Irregulars is set in Victorian era London, the city looking as grey and smoky as ever.

The series takes its name from characters who appeared in Arthur’s written works, named the Baker Street Irregulars.

These characters, young boys who Sherlock uses on the streets of London to gain intelligence while carrying out his investigative work, are featured in three stories alongside the famous detective.

In 1983, the BBC released a TV series called The Baker Street Boys, in which Sherlock was always notably absent while Dr Watson acted as the liaison with the street-savvy kids.

Season one of The Irregulars is available to watch on Netflix.
