Piers Morgan has spoken about the aftermath of his Good Morning Britain exit, claiming that Alex Beresford is the only presenter on the show who hasn’t reached out to him personally.

Piers quit the show earlier this month, having received a record number of Ofcom complaints about his comments on Meghan Markle. The presenter expressed his disbelief on-air over several of the claims made by Meghan during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, including her saying that she suffered suicidal thoughts.

On the day the presenter announced he’d left the programme, Piers and Alex clashed over his remarks and the 55-year-old stormed off set after Alex challenged him live on air.

Now, Piers has said that Alex is the only presenter on Good Morning Britain who hasn’t reached out to him after he left the show – he also admitted that he shouldn’t have walked off the show following their clash.

Writing in his Mail on Sunday column, Piers said: ‘I’ve had nice messages from all the other GMB presenters, apart from Alex Beresford, and many of the wonderful production team, from camera operators and producers to make-up artists. Some really moved me.

‘“Gutted to hear this news,” texted Dr Hilary Jones. “You hold politicians to account like no one else can.”

‘“You support the underprivileged people with no voice. You are generous, hugely well researched and funny. My respect for you has grown exponentially this year and I shall miss you my friend.”

“’The country actually needs you even if some people don’t know it. We’ve lost our General and you are sadly missed already.”’

Piers walked off the show after being challenged by Alex, who spoke about Meghan ‘cutting him off’ in the past.

‘I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme,’ Alex said at the time, causing Piers to walk off.

‘I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one and she cut you off… She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. ‘Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.’

Writing about Alex in his column, Piers went on to say: ‘Alex Beresford seemed equally uptight and launched into a very personal attack.

‘I don’t mind outside guests trying to make a name for themselves by whacking me like this, but I wasn’t going to sit there and take it from one of my own team, especially someone who I’ve gone out of my way to help whenever he’s asked me for advice about his career.’

In a statement afterward Piers left the show, Alex said he never intended for Piers to quit – but he did want him to listen.

‘I hoped we could reach a place of understanding,’ he wrote. ‘It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion we have to agree to disagree.

Meanwhile, Piers also took the opportunity to apologise to Susanna Reid for ‘leaving her in the lurch so suddenly’.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
