Paddy McGuinness gets the need for speed in the latest Top Gear – literally leaving pieces of his car flying as he drives straight into a quarry.

In a road trip across the Scottish Highlands in tonight’s episode with Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris, the trio are given the task of a racing through a quarry in a timed lap in their chosen cars.

In tonight’s episode, Paddy – who previously was spun off course in another challenge – speeds straight down a near-vertical drop in a Mercedes-AMG G63, with Freddie and Chris noticing a piece of the car broke off on landing.

Completely unaware, Paddy carried on driving, and took his eyes off the track as he told the cameras: ‘When you put your foot down, by God it goes. Nought to fifty in less than five seconds. In a two-and-a-half tonne car, that is just bonkers.’

But as he headed towards a road bump, Chris and Freddie looked worried as he refused to slow down.

Is he heading towards a disaster?

The race comes as the team put reports that the Land Rover Defender 2.0 the ‘ultimate’ off-roader on sale – with Chris sitting behind the wheel in that chosen car.

Paddy is in the Mercedes-AMG, while Freddie is in an Ariel Nomad – the two biggest competitors on the market.

Putting all three cars to the test, the off-road race is followed by high-speed clay pigeon shooting challenge and a race to deliver a massive lightbulb to a lighthouse because… well, there has to be some shenanigans when it comes to these three.

The Stig later joins them to go ‘road skiing’ (do not try that at home) with the trio testing towing capabilities and wearing titanium boots as they’re dragged along tarmac by cars.

It’s only after all the challenges that the real winner will be revealed.

All in a day’s work then, eh lads?

Top Gear airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
