Alabama Shakes drummer Steven Johnson has been arrested on child abuse charges in Limestone County, Alabama.

The county Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Rolling Stone that he was arrested on Wednesday and taken to jail, with bail at $21,500 (£15,500).

He was indicted by a grand jury on charges of wilful torture, abuse and wilfully maltreating a child.

Johnson has an arraignment date set for April 7.

It comes after the musician pleaded guilty to violating a domestic violence protection order in March 2020. He was handed down a one-year suspended prison sentence.

The Grammy award-winning group have been on a break since 2018, with front woman Brittany Howard launching a solo career. She released her album Jaime in 2019.

Together they have released albums Boys & Girls in 2012 – which won them a Grammy – and the follow=up Sound & Colour in 2015.

A representative for Alabama Shakes has been contacted for comment.
