After rejecting several reboots, Emilio Esteves reveals why he said yes to The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers

Emilio Estevez has revealed why he ‘famously rejected’ previous reboots and revivals before saying yes to The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

The original Mighty Ducks film franchise began in 1992, with the first film starring Estevez as an attorney who, as part of community service, ends up coaching a hockey team that is consistently at the bottom of the league.

And nearly 30 years later, the 58-year-old actor returns as Gordon Bombay in the rebooted Disney Plus series, where The Mighty Ducks have now become an elite travelling hockey team.

Discussing why he hadn’t returned to the franchise earlier, Emilio said: ‘Over the years, there have been a lot of reunions, whether it was through the Anaheim Ducks or various charities. Famously, I have rejected all of those, whether it’s a reunion for Breakfast Club or The Outsiders or St. Elmo’s Fire or Young Guns, all of them,

He continued to Entertainment Weekly: ‘Fortunately, I’ve been able to have starred in movies that have stood the test of time and have a long shelf life, so a lot of folks have wanted to see reunions of where are they now.

‘So on one hand, it’s a blessing to have been involved in that, but on the other hand, it’s like, I rarely, if ever, participate. So to come back do a Mighty Ducks reunion with replaying this role was a big step.’

Despite reuniting with the original Mighty Ducks writer Steven Brill for the new series, Emilio admitted that he wasn’t sure how they would develop his character of Gordon.

It was only when he was told that his character had become much more mysterious and in a darker place that he signed on for the new reboot.

It was previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter in early 2018 that a Mighty Ducks series was in early development at ABC Signature Studios.

Production began in Vancouver in February 2020, and the first episode has already aired on Disney Plus.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers follows the journey of 12-year-old Evan whose mother encourages him to form a team of hockey underdogs with the help of Gordon Bombay.

The second episode of the Mighty Ducks: Game Changer will air on Disney Plus on Friday, April 1.
