Everglades National Park on lockdown over ‘active shooter’ warning as Florida police hunt long-haired white man, 33
EVERGLADES National Park was on lockdown over an “active shooter” warning, police announced on Sunday.
The Florida park was closed just after 8pm as police hunted for a long-haired white man, 33.
Everglades National Park told people to “shelter in place” as they shared warning of the shooting.
“Active shooter incident happening at Everglades NP,’ park officials shared on Twitter.
“Main park road (SR 9336) closed for public safety.”
People in the Flamingo area were urged to shelter in place.
“Suspect is a 33 y.o. white male,” the National Park added.
Local, federal and state agencies are all working together in response to the incident, officials said.
As of 8.45pm, police said there were no injuries to report.
Police said the “suspect fired at park rangers unprovoked.”
The man had allegedly been stopped by law enforcement officials when he began shooting at them, WPLG reported.
“Suspect is still at large,” the National Park tweeted.
Alvaro Vargas, who was at the park fishing with a friend on Sunday, told WSVN that he heard gunshots.
He told the outlet he was not sure if the sound came from a suspect or authorities.
Just after 9pm, Everglades authorities announced that the suspect had been located and is in custody.
“Incident has been resolved,” the National Park said.
Authorities advised people to continue avoiding the area, and said the park entrance and main road would stay closed.
