Katy Perry accused of being ‘mean’ by American Idol fans after singer continues to ‘fake out’ contestants
Katy Perry has come under fire from fans who believe she is being ‘mean’ by faking out American Idol contestants before sending through to the next round.
The singer – and fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – have been consistently tricking hopefuls into thinking they would not be continuing to compete in the competition series, only to confirm that they have made it on to the next round.
Katy, 36, took to Twitter to joke about the fact they pulled the trick twice on contestant Cassandra Coleman, however, fans were not loving it.
Many claimed the move was ‘mean’ and ‘tiring’ as the new mom encouraged viewers to ‘drink’ every time the judges did the trick.
‘Take a shot every time we fake out a contestant,’ Katy wrote on Twitter, as she tried to keep the situation light.
She then tweeted: ‘You know @LukeBryanOnline @lionelrichie and I LOVE a fakeout maybe we should all play a game of mafia together and see who will come out onTop with upwards arrow above #AmericanIdol’.
The Fireworks singer then posted multiple snippets of Cassandra Coleman being faked out as she joked: ‘We’re 2 for 2 on faking out @casscoleman. “Drink twice!”‘.
Many fans were not pleased by the game, which they felt to be taking advantage of the contestant’s emotions.
Another wrote: ‘My mom doesn’t appreciate the torture you give the contestants and her lmaooo’.
‘I wonder if they know they don’t have to do a fake out on every single contestant?’ one annoyed fan stated.
One viewer added, ‘i hate the fake out game’, ‘ while another asked: ‘Why are ya’ll so mean.’
However, Katy was loving the game as she asked fans at the end of the episode: ‘How many of you are drunk / energized from playing the fakeout game? Cocktail glass#AmericanIdol’.
American Idol airs Sundays on ABC.
