Rachel Bilson has revealed the awkward moment she shared with former school friends Rami Malek after he forced her to take down a throwback photo she shared online.

The O.C. star opened up about the interaction on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast when asked what it was like to go to Notre Dame high school alongside the likes of Rami and Kirsten Dunst.

Rachel then revealed how her friendship with the Mr. Robot actor, 39, had changed in a way she didn’t expect as she began: ‘I have a funny story for you. Rami was a good friend of mine.’

The Jumper actress, 39, revealed the two had been in the ‘same crew’ and even starred as the leads together in The Crucible in their senior year.

However, they didn’t stay as close as they were in school after finding fame. But when Rachel posted a throwback photo in 2019, she was under the belief that Rami would be too bothered about it.

She told Dax: ‘So, obviously, he gets super famous. And he’s always been extremely talented. A really amazing actor, even in high school.

‘I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway. We’re super nerdy and it was the dorkiest picture of both of us. But I throw it up because I think it’s funny and important to be able to make fun of yourself.’

The Hart of Dixie star continued: ‘He had a gold chain on. I’m like, “Rami, where did you get the gold chain?” I’m just being funny and we were good friends.

‘I don’t usually check my DMs on my Instagram. Maybe a week goes by and I actually look and I have a message from Rami – but it wasn’t like, “Hey, how are you? Blah blah blah.”‘

She explained: ‘It was straight into, “I would really appreciate it if you take that down. I’m a really private person.”

‘I was like, “Oh s**t, okay”. I got really hot and I start sweating. I get really nervous like, “Oh my god what did I do?”

The actress couldn’t hide her disappointment as she continued: ‘He was a good friend of mine and it’s a funny picture and I don’t take myself that seriously.

‘I guess he didn’t like the picture of himself. I’m friends with his stylist and she was like “Well, it’s not a great picture of him.”‘

However, Rachel didn’t think that should have been a big issue as she explained: ‘I’m like okay, we were 16. … I had some weird Chola thing going on, it was what it was. You just accept it.

‘But it was right before the Oscars and I remember Josh Schwartz being like “You did him dirty, he’s about to nominated.” I was like, “What do you mean?” This was my friend, it’s a funny picture.’

Indeed, the photo was shared in January 2019 just a few weeks before the Oscars, where Rami won the gong for Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody.

Rachel laughed: ‘I guess I should have found something more flattering, I don’t know. But I removed it and wrote him a really nice message saying, “I’m so sorry, go get the Oscar, you’re doing amazing” and I never hear anything back… which is fine.’

The actress couldn’t hide her disappointment as she continued: ‘I was super bummed because he was always so nice and we were good friends. I’m just a big fan on not taking yourself seriously… especially at that level of fame and talent.

‘But look, he wants to be super respected and it’s his thing so I took it down but I was just a little bummed at how it was handled.’

Guess we won’t be seeing another more throwback snaps of Rami appearing online anytime soon, then.
