Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi: Joel Edgerton confirmed to return as Kumail Nanjiani joins all-star cast
The first cast list of Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi has been announced – and Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker are reuniting with two familiar faces from the film prequels.
Bonnie Piesse, who played Beru in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and Joel Edgerton, who played her husband Owen, have been confirmed to be returning for the new adventures.
Owen Lars was Anakin’s stepbrother, and together with Beru, raised Luke Skywalker, Anakin’s son, until their deaths during the reign of the Galactic Empire.
It was their deaths that spurred Luke to join the Alliance, triggering the events of the original Star Wars trilogy in Star Wars: A New Hope.
Joining the team are new faces to the universe, including Marvel’s The Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani, and the previously confirmed Indira Varma (Game Of Thrones, This Way Up).
Homeland star Rupert Friend, and Straight Outta Compton’s O’Shea Jackson are also both joining the cast.
Sung Kang (Fast and Furious 6), Simone Kessell (Reckoning, The Crossing) and Benny Safdie (Pieces of a Woman, Good Time) complete the new line-up.
Production will begin on the series in April and is the latest in a collection of upcoming expansions to the Star Wars universe.
Listed as a ‘special event series’, it’s expected this will be a one-off Obi-Wan dedicated outing.
The official synopsis from Disney reads: ‘The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.’
It’s assumed the series will bridge the gap between the prequel trilogy and the original Star Wars film, A New Hope.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi has yet to be given a release date on Disney Plus.
