Alan Titchmarsh has thrown his support behind Prince Charles while encouraging others not to make judgements, following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sat down with Oprah for a two-hour long chat that aired in the US and the UK, earlier this month.

During the interview, the couple opened up about their decision to leave the Royal family and move to America.

Meghan candidly spoke of how she struggled with her mental health and claimed to have experienced racism within the palace, while Harry touched on his strained relationship with his father and how Prince Charles had ‘cut him off’.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Love Your Garden host Alan spoke out in defence of Prince Charles, as he praised the Royal for the work he has done for the UK and slammed: ‘It’s very easy to judge people.’

Branded the Royal family’s ‘favourite gardener’ by hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard, Alan said: ‘I don’t know if that’s true, I’m not claiming that. I won’t comment on the interview at all, except to say that the Prince of Wales, the work that he has done for this country is self-evident.

‘And if you look at what he’s achieved in his life, we need to value that.’

Alan continued: ‘It’s very easy to judge other people on their families, but as most of us know, we don’t know the inside stories for these families, it’s far better to judge people as we know them.

‘My knowledge of the Prince of Wales is that he is an incredibly hardworking man – the hardest working man I know, who has achieved so much in his life and I value his input into our society enormously.’

Alan’s comments live on air came after he said he ‘feels for’ Prince Charles in an interview with The Mirror.

‘I think it’s sad he’s had to be put through what he’s been put through, but he’s got enough people, I hope, who value what he does and who can see what he does and can field for him,’ he said.

During his interview with Oprah, which first aired on CBS, Harry addressed his relationship with his dad and said he feels ‘really let down’.

‘There’s a lot to work through there. I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like, and Archie’s his grandson,’ Harry said.

‘At the same time I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship, but they only know what they know.’

Following the interview airing, the Royal family released a statement that read: ‘The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

‘The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
