A controversial musical based on the life of Princess Diana has been given a release date by Netflix after being filmed without an audience.

Diana: The Musical, which was meant to launch on Broadway in March 2020, has been recorded and will now launch on Netflix on October 1.

The production team announced the news, and said in a statement: ‘The chance to share our show, first with Netflix’s global audience, and then welcoming a live audience back on Broadway, is something we’ve all been dreaming about for more than a year.

‘We could not be more thrilled to finally share both the film and the Broadway musical with the world.’

The performance will debut on Broadway in December.

Diana: The Musical follows a fictional take on the Princess’s life, with reported scenes including her relationship with James Hewitt and her breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles.

In one scene, Queen Elizabeth (to be played by Judy Kaye) is seen telling Diana (Jeanna de Waal): ‘In the old days we would have chopped off your head’.

The announcement has caused controversy for Royals fans, who think that the embellished scenes may be too harsh and unfair.

Other reported moments include Prince Charles being upset that Diana ‘ignored her request for a girl’ after the birth of Prince Harry, and Diana clashing with love rival Camilla Parker Bowles, which never actually happened.

The show ends with news reports of Diana’s death in August 1997.
