Former Super Bowl Winner Explains Why Elite WRs Avoid Playing with Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson was a literal ‘cheat code’ over the course of the 2019 NFL season. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback threw for 3,127 yards with 36 passing TDs. He rushed for 1,206 yards with 7 rushing TDs.

His performances that year earned him the 2019 NFL MVP award by unanimous vote. However, his 2020 NFL campaign with the Ravens did not go as per plan. They finished second in the AFC North with an 11-5 record but still managed to qualify for the playoffs. But their post-season run did not last long as they lost to the Buffalo Bills by a 17-3 record in the AFC Divisional Round.

A lot of criticism that was directed towards Baltimore, centered around Jackson and his below-par displays in the playoffs. But why aren’t more up-and-coming wideouts unwilling to join the Ravens? Here’s what a certain former NFL star has to say.

Why do wide receivers hesitate to play with 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson?

Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings featured on the latest segment of Speak For Yourself. The former Super Bowl XLV champion outlined the reason behind why wide receivers across the league are hesitant to sign for the Baltimore Ravens.

He said, “When it comes to free agency, why aren’t receivers flocking to go play with this MVP? It’s because as a receiver you want someone who you know, without a doubt, is going to be able to get you the ball. I don’t believe that any receiver in this league thinks that Lamar Jackson can throw the ball.”

“They question whether he can throw the ball, consistently and accurately. That’s why you don’t see guys flocking to the Ravens wanting to play with this MVP All-Star of an elite talent in Lamar Jackson,” Jennings said on the show.

Jackson threw for 162 yards with 1 interception as the Ravens bowed out of the playoffs last season. The Florida-born athlete has failed to show up in big games, despite winning the MVP title in 2019. But it will take some added firepower to catapult John Harbaugh’s side to the AFC conference final, and possibly, even the Super Bowl.
