Noel Clarke has looked back on his win at the Baftas in 2009 when he took home the coveted Rising Star award.

This year’s new crop of incredible actors in the running are Kingsley Ben-Adir from One Night In Miami, Rocks actress Bukky Bakray, Morfydd Clark from Saint Maud, His House star Sope Dirisu and County Lines star Conrad Khan.

The Bulletproof star promises the 2021 hopefuls that ‘good things are coming’ off the back of the nomination, adding that the award led to bigger and better things.

He said: ‘Winning the EE Rising Star Award was a catalyst moment in my career.

‘It was an amazing honour, knowing that the award held such weight – the recognition of the industry, my peers and, of course, ultimately the public who showed up for me.’

Noel continued: ‘Looking back at that moment on the big screen for the first time in a long time, I had to take a minute.

‘I have so much respect for the 2021 nominees and can say with authority that good things are coming, as long as they continue to work hard.’

The writer and director has gone on to make films such as Adulthood and The Anomaly and penned scripts for Bulletproof, Fast Girls and The Knot.

The 45-year-old is set to be honoured at this year’s ceremony with the award for outstanding British contribution to cinema.

Speaking of the honour, Noel commented: ‘Thank you Bafta for this acknowledgment and recognition of my work over the past two decades. I will endeavour to continue to make ground-breaking work and open doors for underrepresented people that may not often get a chance.’

The Doctor Who star is being recognised for his work in bringing diversity to the British film and television industry.

His first TV appearance was over two decades ago in the Channel 4 series Metrosexuality.

Noel went on to score critical acclaim by bagging the Laurence Olivier award for most promising newcomer for his performance in the play Where Do We Live at the Royal Court in 2003.

His biggest success story came after he wrote and starred in the cult phenomenon feature film Hood trilogy, Kidulthood (2006), Adulthood (2008) and Brotherhood (2016), the latter two of which he directed.

Voting for the EE Rising Star Award 2021 is now open at ee.co.uk/BAFTA until 12pm on April 9, and the winner will be announced at the EE BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday April 11 on BBC One.
