Archbishop’s shocked response when Meghan Markle claimed he’d wed her and Harry 3 days before royal wedding

THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury has revealed his shocked response when Meghan Markle claimed he had wed her and Prince Harry three days before the royal wedding.

In a bombshell TV chat Meghan told Oprah Winfrey she and Harry tied the knot “in our backyard” before the lavish public wedding on Saturday May 19, 2018.

However last week The Sun exposed the claim as a sham — with their wedding certificate proving they wed on the official date.

Meghan, 39, had stunned the world by telling US talk show queen Oprah: “You know, three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that.

“The vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

But now the Archbishop, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, has spoken out about the bombshell interview.

He told BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine: “I can promise you, the wedding was on the Saturday.

“I signed a wedding certificate on that day and if I sign a false wedding certificate that is perjury.”

He then went on to speak of his own reaction while watching Meghan tell the world he had married them three days previously.

He said:  There was an element of ‘uh oh’. Yes there was a bit of ‘uh oh’.

“But you know she clarified that a few days later and it didn’t matter at all.

“The wedding was on the Saturday and it was beautiful.

“It was a fantastic wedding and it was a really intimate moment and you sort of forgot there were a billion people watching.”

Vine also spoke to the Archbishop about how he had almost fallen for The Sun’s April Fool’s day joke.

The Sun today fooled thousands when we jokingly told the world the Archbishop had performed the ceremony for the secret vows dressed as Elvis.

Vine said: “I don’t know if you opened The Sun newspaper today but they claim an exclusive that when you did these vows, or whatever they were, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle three days before their actual wedding, at their request you chose to dress as Elvis and sing ‘Love Me Tender’.”

The Archbishop said: “Yes, well you have noticed the date, haven’t you Jeremy?”

To which Vine admitted that it had taken him a moment to realise.
