Made For Love sees Cristin Milioti tasked with having to portray what it’s like to have a chip implanted in her brain, and the show’s creator believes the actress was the perfect woman for the job.

Based on the eponymous novel by Alissa Nutting, the HBO Max series revolves around Milioti’s character Hazel Green, a woman who escapes her marriage to billionaire sociopath Byron Gogol after discovering he had implanted a chip in her head.

The chip in question allows Byron to access Hazel’s sights and feelings while she takes refuge with her widowed father and tries to figure out a way to regain control.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, writer and executive producer Alissa Nutting explained how the How I Met Your Mother actress was the right choice for the job.

Nutting stated: ‘At the heart of the tone for the show, we really wanted to keep both the pain and the comedy, and Cristin is just so versatile in that way.

‘She was really the only person we thought about in the terms of the role, knowing that this character would have to convey so much with her expressions in her eyes – especially in the hub.’

The author continued: ‘She had to show the audience that what she’s expressing and doing to others – and even to her husband – is not what she’s actually feeling inside. It’s such a high wire act and Cristin just elevated it and layered it so, so beautifully in all of its complexity.’

Indeed, getting the tonal balance right for the adaptation of her novel was a key point for the writer as she explained: ‘For me, the theme is the length and extremes we go to in order to try to feel love and try to avoid a loss.’

Nutting also spoke to Metro.co.uk about how the pandemic helped to shape storylines in the show.

Made For Love debuts on HBO Max on April 1.
